Early Life

Artist Birhanu Tezera Bekele was born in Addis Abeba in 1971, G.C., in the Kazanchis neighborhood, known locally as St. Gebrieal Neighborhood, behind Africa Bakery. He completed his first and second levels of education at Kokeb Tsibah and then moved on to Commerce,  where he received his degree.

The singer is well known for creating Ethiopian hip-hop, reggae music, and traditional Ethiopian songs. He has been well recognized and beloved by many since he began his music career and continues to be one of Ethiopia’s most treasured singers. He started singing in church when he was 16 years old and then moved on to sing in kebele Kinet with musician Gera Tibeb. That’s when he realized he had the talent and potential to create a career in music.

Career In Music

When he got older, he was given the opportunity to record his first album (La Fontaine), Tewe Amlake, in 1988, where he collaborated with musician Tadele Roba. This record was well received by Ethiopians. When he finished the first Album, he was able to travel to Kenya and perform in four clubs with artist Tadele Roba.

Personal Life

Artist Berhanu Tezera became a household name and respected vocalist by working hard and dedicating himself to his craft. Listening to renowned performers like Melkamu Tebeje and Areghagne Worash influenced him to pursue a career as a singer. He honed his talent with God’s help and practiced every day to become the outstanding vocalist he is now. The well-known singer is not all about music when it comes to his personal life; he likes to enjoy movies and football in his free time.

Being a musician, on the other hand, is not always glamorous and polished. Behind the scenes, all artists face issues that are not evident to the general public. He stated that there were definitely some difficult periods and that it was a hardship at the beginning of his music career. He has stated that when he traveled to the London countryside with musician Tadele Roba, they had airplane engine trouble, that was an episode he would never forget in his life.

Millenium Performances

His most memorable performance was when he came to Meskel Square to sing his well-known songs, such as ‘Yambule’ and ‘Anbesw Agesa’, at a concert called ‘Kibre Le Ethiopia’ for the Ethiopian millennium celebration. He performed with 15 other singers, including Tilahun Gesesse Mohamoud and Beyonce as well as a performance he gave with Neway and Gigi in the United States at the Dallas ESFNA in the year 2000 Europian millennium.

Through all the hardship and the success, Artist Birhanu has stayed centered and a household name with an incredible vocal that we all know today.
